Becoming A Modern Minimalist

Oftentimes, when people envision minimalism, they see tiny homes, five articles of clothing, one pair of shoes and living out of a backpack. While that may be the reality for some minimalists, it can look differently for everybody.

Minimalism was best summed up to me in this quote but Joshua Becker:

“Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things you value and the removal of anything that distracts us from it.”

It has nothing to do with the number of clothing pieces you own, the square footage of your home or how few items you have. It does, however, have everything to do with structuring your life with purpose to intentionally promote that is of most value to you.

Stating the obvious here, but we are all different and each of us have desires and values unique to us as individuals. Choosing every single day to put those values first and removing anything that distracts you from realizing those values is what minimalism is about.

My family and my freedom are of highest importance and value to me. Reducing the number of items I have so that I can design my life around making memories with my family and traveling across seas is why I choose minimalism. I choose every day to live simply because it means a fair exchange for increase in time. It means less dishes to wash, less clothes to fold, less cleaning, less maintenance and instead, more cuddles, more Sundays sleeping in, more family home-cooked meals and more movie nights.

Minimalism, for me, is not only owning less- it's doing less. It’s slowing down intentionally where it matters most and while others may view my life as busy, which it can be, it is all intentional. It is all promoting what I value most: my family and my freedom.
